2000 Wrap-up
All things considered, this one turned out
pretty well. There was an all-time high of 49 pilots registered and flying.
We didn't accomplish everything that was
planned, but the weather allowed all to have some fun. For those who arrived
Wednesday and before, there were howling south winds, right up the main slope.
As more folks drifted in Thursday, the wind shifted to the northwest. We
assembled at the Minooka Park area of the lake and had a day of good flying. In
the process, we made new friends with the corporate owner and the rancher
leasing the land we flew over.
Friday was the day planned for the foamie
events. And things looked bad with a 5-mph north breeze. We assembled along the
west face of the main slope bowl and had a wonderful day of fun flying. HL,
bungee planes, electrics, thermal ships and even a Phoenix rocket plane enjoyed
some of the best thermal conditions you will ever see. Countless flights went
long and high. Some fliers commented that even though we didn't get to do the
foamies, this was their favorite day of the weekend.
Saturday was a contest director's dream come
true. Moderate south winds, right up the main slope. It wasn't a howling sort of
day, but the air was sufficient and smooth. First event was Foamie Combat,
followed by One-design and Unlimited racing. These events were completed by 5
pm. We could have attempted the Warbird race, but a pilot vote decided to defer
it till Sunday. The wind then promptly picked up, due to a storm system moving
in from the north, and the sky was full of planes enjoying 1 1/2 hours of the
best air of the weekend.
The thunderstorm brought a drenching end to the
day's activities at 630. Which was perfect timing since the banquet in Lucas
began at 730. The Senior Center was a new banquet site for us and was just
right. The food was good and there were lots of prizes to give away in the
pilot's raffle.
The club purchased 3 Hitec radios and 6 servos

This year we started what might become an annual
award; a "Lifetime Achievement" trophy for individuals who have
contributed above and beyond to making this event a success. The first recipient
of the award was Paul Wright, former event director for 6 years and now living
in England.
Sunday was another marginal day with light
northwest winds, so back to Minooka Park. We made an attempt at a quick and
dirty Warbird event, but there just wasn't enough sustained wind to do it. So
the remaining fliers amused themselves with light air planes.
